UGA Made Our Day

For the past several years, SpArc has hosted a group of students from University of Georgia's IMPACT group, an alternative spring break program that immerses students in a full week of community service activities. This year's group of 18 students made an indelible mark on our organization not only by assisting with our mosaic mural project but also by creating life long connections with our program participants. Their kindness was an inspiration to us all.

Congratulations to Bryce Smith, a Photo License Technician, for winning PIBH's coveted 2013 Nettie Mann Achievement Award. The Arc of Philadelphia was awarded a $2,000 grant by the UNICO Foundation, an Italian American service organization dedicated to charitable works, higher education and patriotic deeds, at a check presentation ceremony held on Wednesday, September 26. This grant is a matching gift and will help The Arc reach the next phase of our school to community transition program, Creating Environments for Ongoing Success (CEOs) for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This program, launched in 2010 with a seed grant from Walmart Foundation, is designed to address the growing gap in funding for integrated vocational training and supports for students with IDD who are graduating high school and interested in competitive employment in the community.

Our deepest thanks to the UNICO membership for their continued support of our efforts and to Arc/PDDC board member and past UNICO National President, Nick Quercetti, for his help in identifying this grant opportunity.

Tune In Music Lovers!

PDDC’s Program Specialist and Music Teacher, Nate Gonzalez, and
radio host Bonnie Squires at WWDB-AM's studio.

PDDC’s Program Specialist and Music Teacher, Nate Gonzalez,  was interviewed early this week by host Bonnie Squires on WWDB-AM's "Music Talk" show.  The show aired on Thursday August 2 at noon on 860AM. It will be repeated on Saturday at 5PM and a couple of more times next week.  Nate, recently named Employee of the Month, spoke about his role at PDDC and how he uses music to reach participants who are not only shy, quiet or disengaged but also those who are passionate, restless, and longing to express themselves.

Nate’s goal to bring these individuals out of their shell to a place of connection with others,  through consistent and patient instruction, free play and group jam sessions, has been enormously successful and enriching for all.

An accomplished musician and singer/songwriter in his own right,  Nate inspired several PDDC participants to step out of their comfort zone to audition and perform in the annual talent show in May.  Currently, he is in the process of helping these fledgling artists form a band.   In his spare time, this soft-spoken, unassuming educator is on a one-man mission to rebuild PDDC’s music classroom since years of  budget cuts have made it difficult to replace aging and broken equipment.  Although Nate and his students make do with what they have,  he wanted to give something back to his students in some way so he decided to appeal to local music stores for in-kind donations of new or gently used instruments such as  a bass guitar, a drum set, starter guitars and amplifier equipment to enhance the musical experience for everyone.  Nate is dedicated to his students and the transformative power of music.  Let the music begin!

An Employment Partners Trainee's Story

Employment Partners trainee Linnett Roberts (left) works with PDDC Cultural Arts Center participant Christina Woloszczuk. Photo by Laurence Kelly/Arc-PDDC

“I loved everything about my experience at PDDC. I’ve learned a lot about myself and how much I enjoy helping others. I get a lot of satisfaction out of doing things for others. I love the staff, too — they are so kind and nice and they teach me the skills I need to know to reach my goals."

                                                                                                          - Linnett Roberts

Linnett Roberts, a lively 33 year-old  from Southwest Philadelphia, recently completed a 4 week evaluation and assessment program at PDDC and is excited to start intensive training at Employment Partners to become a childcare worker.  Linnett says her time at PDDC has been productive and she’s learned a lot about how to help others, skills she feels will help her reach her ultimate goal of working with and taking care of  young children.  Linnett believes that children need lots of  love and attention, and plenty of activities to keep them healthy and strong.  An outspoken, social young woman with boundless energy and a passion for concerts, movies, music and line-dancing, Linnett looks forward to her training, which she hopes will lead to greater independence, like a full-time job, an apartment and maybe even a puppy to call her own.

While we cannot comment on the specific medical issues surrounding this case, we can raise our collective voice on behalf of thousands of individuals with disabilities in the Philadelphia area and their families, and millions of others across the country and around the world, and rigorously advocate and protect the equal rights, health and well-being of all our citizens, regardless of disability.”

Craft-Bilt Company Brings Holiday Cheer for 26th Year

Photos by Bonnie Squires

Craft-Bilt Manufacturing Company executives and staff members delivered holiday gifts at The Arc of Philadelphia facility for the 26th straight year. (left to right) Amy Gabler, Vice President Debbei Stone, Santa Claus (Richard Ball), Mandy Gebbie, and Inger Stone, wife of company CEO Andy Stone. Bruce Hulick, Executive Director of the Arc and PDDC was on hand to welcome them.

Christmas arrived early for The Arc of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Developmental Disabilities Corporation (ARC-PDDC), thanks to the award-winning Craft-Bilt Manufacturing Company of Souderton, maker of sunrooms and awnings. Craft-Bilt continues to carry on on a holiday tradition which they started in 1986.

On Wednesday, December 14, 2011, Craft-Bilt executives and staff members arrived from Souderton for the 26th year in a row to The Arc and PDDC, at 2350 W. Westmoreland Street, Philadelphia, in order to deliver gifts. Inger Stone, wife of company CEO Andy Stone, receives a list of needed items from the Arc and PDDC executives, and she shops at Kohl's to fill Christmas wishes. Then Craft-Bilt's Mandy Gebbie organizes a wrapping party, where all the employees team up to gift-wrap more than 70 sets of gift items, including sweaters, scarves, hats, team jerseys, CDs, comic books and toiletries.

Craft-Bilt's Richard Ball, an account manager, dressed up as Santa Claus, and, after distributing wrapped presents to the clients of PDDC, he walks through the Training Center, distributing small stuffed animals and spreading joy to dozens of more people.

Inger Stone is delighted that the gifts she selected made such a big hit. Photo by Bonnie Squires

Since Debbie Stone, the daughter of the founder and the sister of Andy Stone, company president, had been a special education teacher in the Philadelphia School District for years before joining the family business, she had suggested a project involving the clients of the Arc of Philadelphia and PDDC to begin this tradition.

According to Debbie Stone, the Craft-Bilt employees look forward to this special visit to the Arc and PDDC each year, and they enjoy having contact with their special people. The smiles and hugs were evidence of the delight which the Craft-Bilt gifts brought to the Arc and PDDC clients.
Craft-Bilt also is a major sponsor of the annual Arc and PDDC Golf Outing, sponsoring several teams of Philadelphia School District students.

Points of Transformation Award for Michael Gerkovich and Shalaine Wallace

Michael Gerkovich, a direct support professional for the Cultural Arts Center since 2009, and Shalaine Wallace, Clinical Director, were recognized at the Points of Transformation Awards presented by the Philadelphia Intellectual disAbilities Services in September. Everyday, Mike and Shalaine put PDDC’s mission into practice to provide meaningful experiences and a sense of community belonging to the people PDDC supports.

Mike uses his resources and creativity as a working artist to coordinate projects like theater performances, artists’ books, and gardening. Mike explains that watching the people in Cultural Arts become more self-sufficient by using the arts and the “do it yourself” ethos to help them learn valuable social and life skills, is what keeps him motivated, present and accountable to the artists and to his colleagues.

Shalaine has touched the lives of many people over the last ten years but it has been her recent efforts to help a particular person, J.B., that has had a profound, life-changing effect on her. After thoughtful consideration, she made a decision to begin the process of becoming J.B.’s life sharing provider. A huge step that she doesn’t take lightly, Shalaine explains that she is ready to embrace the next adventure in her personal life and her career. She believes she can make a real difference in J.B.’s life at home and in the community.

The bonds Mike and Shalaine have developed between their colleagues and the people they support can be seen in how people view each as collaborator, trusted confidant, and friend.

Congratulations, Mike and Shalaine!
