Director of Finance (Chief Financial Officer)

Summary
The Director of Finance (Chief Financial Officer) is responsible to support the mission of The Arc/PDDC by directing and overseeing all fiscal functions of the organization in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, other regulatory requirements and nonprofit fiscal management best practices. Partner with the Executive Director to achieve the strategy and goals of The Arc/PDDC.
Position Responsibilities
Fiscal Management
- Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the organization's fiscal function and performance.
- Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.
- Ensure the application of appropriate internal controls, best practice financial procedures and overall fiscal accountability and transparency.
- Contribute to the executive helping to determine the strategy and goals of the organization. Contribute to the operational plan, evaluate and advise on financial impact and lead the development of the budget that will drive strategy.
- Partner with the executive director, contributing expertise and advice. Actively drive the leadership agenda throughout the organization.
- Advice, from the financial perspective on any contracts into which the organization may enter. Oversee all contracts and grants.
- Drive effective and efficient fiscal operations including accounting, payroll, and investment functions.
- Engage the finance committee of the board of directors to develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans and projections.
- Improve the budgeting process through education on financial issues impacting program budgets and provide tools for effective budget management. Meet regularly with program leaders to keep informed and to offer direction.
- Oversee cash flow planning, ensuring availability of funds as needed.
- Develop and implement effective financial reporting systems.
- Provide timely, accurate and useful analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends in order to assist the Executive Director, Board and other executives in performing their responsibilities.
- Direct the preparation of all financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, reports to stakeholders, tax returns and reports for government regulatory agencies. Ensure accurate, thorough and timely submission of reports. Coordinate external audits.
- Optimize the handling of bank and deposit relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash position.
- Represent the organization to financial partners, including financial institutions, donors, foundation executives, auditors, etc.
- Remain up to date on nonprofit accounting best practices, state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
Staff Management
- Collaborates with the executive director and members of the executive team to align fiscal functions and infrastructure to the overall short and long term goals of the organization.
- Fosters a success-oriented, accountable teamwork environment throughout the organization. Establishes and holds direct reports responsible to create a climate that attracts, retains and motivates high performance. Ensures implementation of performance management program.
- Models positive customer service and the core competencies of the organization. Holds others accountable to do the same.
- Conducts regular meetings with staff and participate in management meetings to ensure priorities are clear, coordination is good and communications are open.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a BS in accounting; a CPA and/or MBA would be preferred with a least 7 years broad finance experience in a management capacity preferably in the non-profit sector.
- Strong financial management skills. Values transparency in fiscal management.
- Enterprise-wide perspective that includes change management, strategic planning and implementation and ability to mobilize resources aligned to organization goals. Able to motivate staff around shared vision.
- Strong interpersonal and presentation skills. Ability to form and maintain strategic external partnerships.
- Strong verbal, written communication and listening skills.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of funders, community leaders, board members, donors, and other stakeholders.
- Hire and develop a caliber staff capable of providing high quality services and support functions, accountable to job responsibilities and motivated to achieve high performance.
- Solid knowledge of financial management, contract negotiation and compliance.
- Able to effectively delegate.
- Ability to multi-task and be in control of numerous tasks at any one time.
- Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills along with excellent organization and management skills.
- Demonstrate initiative, problem solving, analytical skills and follow-through.
- Strong computer skills in all Microsoft office applications. Proficiency in accounting software.
- Clear criminal and child abuse history, medical and drug screen.
- Demonstrate the organization’s core competencies and solid customer service skills.
- Must be flexible to work evenings and weekends as needed.
