Employment Stories
Cecelia’s story
I started out as a volunteer wanting to help families obtain resources for their children. People at The Arc/PDDC appreciated my work. They saw something in me
and ask me to join their staff as a paid employee. The opportunity to do what makes
me feel good, contribute to improving the lives of others, get paid, and receive benefits was a dream come true. It has been 3 years since I moved from being a volunteer to a
paid staff person. I feel appreciated for my work and have been given numerous opportunities to have impact, like serving on local and statewide task forces. I’m
supported and encouraged. I feel blessed to be doing what I think is important.
Beverly’s story
I have been with PDDC for almost 20 years. I began as a direct service
professional, and found my niche when I was promoted to Skills Trainer working with
people in job transitions. PDDC has provided me with many different opportunities
along the way which keeps me fresh in my thinking, allowing me to develop different skills,
and offering me the chance to work alongside different colleagues. I am trusted to do my
job without anyone hanging over me. I have been able to approach my bosses with
concerns and have felt listened to. I believe in treating the people in job transition with
same respect that I have been given as an employee.

Mike’s story
For months before joining PDDC, I heard about how the Cultural Arts Program
was using different art mediums to help individuals express themselves, build
confidence, and improve their ability to relate to others. Having a chance to use art and help people grow is exactly what I was looking for; so a year ago I joined the organization. Every day is an opportunity for me to contribute to the lives of the people
we serve. We place a strong emphasis on building positive relationships in addition to
using a highly individualized approach in our work. We benefit from each other’s
diverse perspectives and experiences. I have found a place for myself here.
