The Arc/PDDC first annual art exhibition showcasing works by artists with developmental disabilities in observance of Mental Retardation Awareness Month


The Arc of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Developmental Disabilities Corporation (PDDC) will host the First Annual Art Exhibition with an Opening Reception, by invitation only, on Friday, March 14, 2008, from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. at 2350 West Westmoreland Street in Philadelphia.

Artists with developmental disabilities will showcase their paintings, drawings, water colors and sculptures, from the Cultural Arts Center at The Arc/PDDC.

The Temple Jazz Trio will perform, and refreshments will be served.  Valet parking is available.

The art work on the invitation is a watercolor called "Grapefruit" by Larry Hightower.  Each artist will received a certificate for his/her creative work.

Norma Carter, Esq., president of the ARC/PDDC board of directors, announced the following members of the Honorary committee for the Opening Reception of the First Annual Art Exhibition of the ARC/PDDC: Mimi Boston-Johnson, Arthur C. Evans, Jr., Ph.D., Representative Dwight Evans, Bernard Featherman, Sandra Featherman, Ph.D., Ronald E. Hinton, Jr., Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., W. Andrews Newman III, Mayor Michael A. Nutter, Speaker Dennis M. O'Brien, Charles P. Pizzi, Governor Edward G. Rendell, Honorable Estelle Richman, Representative James R. Roebuck, Honorable Allyson Y. Schwartz, and Kathy Sykes.

J. Bruce Hulick, executive director of the ARC/PDDC, announced the following members of the ARC/PDDC board of directors serving on the art exhibition committee:
Margie Austin, Paul Berenato, Sr., Louise Ceccarelli, Sanford Goldfine, John Hackman, Karin Maynard, Nicholas Nastasi, Ken Oakes, Nicholas Quercetti, Cathy Roccia-Meier, Michael Weingram, and Barbara Wheeler.

Volunteer hosts include the twenty-one University of Georgia students who have chosen to do their Alternative Spring Break community service at the ARC/PDDC all this week, as well as students from St. Joseph's University who volunteer at the ARC/PDDC all year long.

Eileen Carlin is the Art Exhibition coordinator and has been working with the artists on their projects for months. 

Laura Princiotta, COO of PDDC, and Lisa Savaria, Associate Director of the Cultural Arts Center at PDDC, have arranged a series of special events for the week-long art exhibition.
Monday, March 17, Meet the Artists, from  10 A.M. to 2 P.M.
Tuesday, March 18, Puppet Show, with hand-made puppets, 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. by reservation.
Wednesday, March 19, 10 A.M. to 2 P.M., Create a Work of Art by reservation.
Thursday, March 20, Bake Sale, 10 A.M. to 2 P.M.
Friday, March 21, Closing Luncheon for Family & Caregivers, Noon.  RSVP by March 19th
