U of Georgia students choose Arc/PDDC in Philly for community service during alternative spring break

The ARC/PDDC welcomes 21 students from the University of Georgia who have chosen to perform their Alternative Spring Break community service here from March 9 through 15.

J. Bruce Hulick, executive director of the ARC/PDDC, said that on Sunday, March 9, the students were led on a tour of Philadelphia by Michael Barnes, Associate Marketing Director and Lisa Savaria, Associate Director of the Cultural Arts Center, visiting Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the National Constitution Center and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  For lunch they were bused to Pat's and Geno's in South Philadelphia to experience Philadelphia cheesesteaks.

Staff and consumers held a Pep Rally on Monday morning, March 10, at the ARC/PDDC, to welcome the students. Then the students had breakfast and an orientation session before picking up paint brushes and working on the lower level conference room.  The University of Georgia Students worked side by side with consumers at the ARC/PDDC.

Highlights of their schedule for the week include attending the Flyers-Maple Leafs hockey game on Wednesday, March 12, preceded by a buffet dinner at McFadden's Restaurant Saloon at Citizens Bank Park.  This will be the students' first time attending a professional hockey game.

On Thursday morning, March 13, the students and a group of ARC/PDDC consumers will be bused to the Camden Aquarium for a visit.

Thursday evening, Thunderbird Bowling Center in Northeast Philadelphia is donating a pizza party at 9 P.M. and a bowling party at their facility at 3081 Holm Avenue (past Rhawn Street).

On Friday, March 14, students will assist in setting up for the First Annual Art Exhibition by people with developmental disabilities at the ARC/PDDC, and they will volunteer as hosts and servers for the VIP opening reception at 6:30 P.M. that evening.

Delancey Street Bagels in Bala Cynwyd is donating bagels for breakfast on Tuesday morning.  Other donors during the week include Tastykake, Food Source, and friend of the ARC/PDDC, Tim Bellew.

The First United Methodist Church of Germantown (FUMCOG) has volunteered the students a free place to stay for the week.
