Gov. Rendell Appoints Board Member to The Governor’s Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities

Governor Edward Rendell has appointed Ken Oakes, Vice President of the Arc of Philadelphia/PDDC Board of Directors, to the Governor’s Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities.

Created by executive order of the Gov. Rendell in 2006, this committee offers policy recommendations to the Governor regarding people with disabilities.  A majority of the members of this body are people with disabilities or family members of people with disabilities.

Ken Oakes has been a long-time advocate for the needs of children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families.  Initially becoming involved with the local, state, and national Youth Arc movement in 1975, Mr. Oakes has worked as a special education teacher, administrator, advocate, and university instructor over his 32 years in the field.  Gov. Rendell’s appointment is a recognition of Mr. Oakes’ longstanding service on behalf of people with developmental disabilities.

“I am honored by this appointment,” said Mr. Oakes.  “And look forward to doing my part to assure that the needs of people with disabilities in the state of Pennsylvania are addressed with sound public policy.”

Mr. Oakes has been a member of the Arc of Philadelphia/PDDC Board of Directors since 2006.  He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Arc of Pennsylvania.
