A Sweet Success
by Millie Protheroe
This past weekend’s camping trip to Hershey Park was one of The Arc of Philadelphia / PDDC’s best ever! Even though the weather was hot enough to melt chocolate and a few intense storms tried to put a damper on our campers, our consumers were thrilled with the experience. Our overnight camps are a unique recreational experience that combines wilderness camping with exciting day trips.
By all accounts, the weekend was rewarding for both staff and clients. Arc of Philadelphia/PDDC staff Kenneth, Juanita and Penny showed true dedication to each camper, working diligently to meet their every need. Despite all the hard work, each found the weekend so fulfilling they asked to join us again next year. Of course, it wouldn’t be a camping trip without the presence of The Captain of Camping, Mr. John “RV” Felt and his wife Jackie. During the week, John Felt is the Executive Director of The Arc of Philadelphia/PDDC—but for one weekend a month during the summer months, John rolls up his sleeves and roughs it like every other camper. Cultural Arts Director Lisa Savaria was in awe of their undying enthusiasm.

“I was overwhelmed by their passion for enriching the lives of our consumers. The energy they put forth was inspiring for all of the staff all weekend.”
The campers themselves have nothing but rave reviews for their weekend.
“At camp I slept in a tent and got to go to Hershey Park. I went on a roller coaster and a water slide. There was a storm, which was scary but neat. The staff was great!” said camper Stephen Price Wright.
Another camper, Celestine Marchaman, agreed that the trip was a unique experience.
“Camp was a lot of fun. I can’t wait for next year. I enjoyed myself. I liked the people I was with, the food was good and the park was nice. John asked me to go and I’m glad I did,” said Celestine.
Our adventure in Hershey is one more example of the many ways that The Arc of Philadelphia/PDDC strives to make our consumers’ lives just a little sweeter.
